Jean-Luc Simon was a social worker for people with disabilities until he crashed his car into a tree at the age of 25. It had been raining in the small French village he was living in. Jean-Luc admits he was driving too fast and hydroplaned, veering off the road. He became paraplegic, wheelchair-bound and unemployed.
Jean-Luc is currently the director of Europe’s Disabled Peoples International, a global advocacy group that has organizations on five different continents. It’s a volunteer position. Since his accident, Jean-Luc’s sole income has been pension from the government. In all likelihood, he would lose his pension indefinitely if he got a paid job.
